Details of Multi-Day Heavy Recovery for Tractor Trailer Located on Cliffside

Road Runner Wrecker Service recently assisted with a heavy recovery in Purcellville, VA, on Route 340 VA Road. An eight-member heavy recovery embarked on a multi-day mission to safely retrieve a damaged tractor-trailer that had veered off the road.

The heavy recovery team arrived at the scene which was located on a cliffside. They initiated the rigging process while an environmental company worked on evacuating the fuel from the tanks. To tackle the difficult terrain, the heavy recovery team utilized two powerful rotators, a 75-ton and a 50-ton, along with a tractor and a landoll trailer. A dump truck, bobcat with attachments, service truck, small dump trailer, demolition saw, and other essential tools for heavy recovery were also deployed.

Under challenging conditions, which included diesel fuel on the road causing slippery surfaces, the heavy recovery team made numerous attempts to safely recover the vehicle. Sand was spread on the road to improve traction, allowing for a vertical lift of the tractor and trailer. The trailer had sustained extensive damage during the incident, leading to its fragmentation during the heavy recovery process.

Once the tractor and trailer were securely loaded onto the landoll trailer, they were transported to a nearby gravel area for further examination and to ensure roadworthiness. Debris and sand were meticulously cleared from the roadway to restore safe passage for motorists in heavy recovery scenarios.

The demanding heavy recovery operation spanned three days, with the first day lasting 13 hours, followed by 10.5 hours on the second day, and finally concluding four hours on the third day. The complexity of the heavy recovery was compounded by the steepness of the hillside and the presence of trees that the vehicle had rolled over, making the heavy recovery task even more intricate.

The heavy recovery team worked closely with the Virginia State Police, West Virginia State Police, VDOT, and the WV Department of Highways, demonstrating a coordinated effort to ensure the safety of all involved in heavy recovery situations. The trailer was left in pieces and the tractor suffered severe damage, however, the successful heavy recovery allowed the vehicle to be towed away for further repairs.
